The early years as a spy

Updated: Mar 1, 2020

In this first podcast, Jane Craigie interviews her father, Iain Craigie, about his life and career in intelligence. He started his life as a ‘spy’ in the RAF in the late 1950s/early 1960s, moving on to GCHQ. His early training was at Beaumanor Hall and Bletchley Park.

The main target when he started at Beaumanor Hall was Russia. The equipment was antiquated and involved triangulation from a number of Direction Finding stations, embassies and other facilities all over the world.

This podcast is also about the stories that would remain buried in families unless we spend time talking to eachother and being fascinated about the lives of others.

Jane said: “I feel very lucky to have a Dad like Iain, he is, and always has been an adventurer and my life has been so rich from the day I was born as a result of his inquisitive nature, love of travel and his innate ability to relate to people, whatever their role or culture. Thank you Dad, for everything.”
